  • A Brief, Wandering History of Homoerotic Literature — And Why These Rare Books Matter

A Brief, Wandering History of Homoerotic Literature — And Why These Rare Books Matter

For most of the twentieth century, homoerotic literature lived in the margins — not because it lacked talent, ambition, or readers, but because the world wasn’t ready to look it in the eye. These books circulated quietly, sometimes under pseudonyms, sometimes through tiny presses that operated more like secret societies than publishers. Today, those same titles feel like artifacts from a parallel literary universe: bold, intimate, and often far ahead of their time.

What makes them so fascinating isn’t just the erotic charge — though that’s certainly part of the appeal — but the way they captured desire, identity, and defiance long before mainstream culture had the vocabulary for any of it.

Some authors were pioneers without meaning to be. James Barr’s Quatrefoil offered one of the earliest depictions of a same‑sex relationship that wasn’t drenched in tragedy. Gore Vidal, with The City and the Pillar, scandalised polite society simply by writing about gay men as if they were, well, real people. John Rechy’s City of Night dragged queer desire out of the shadows and into the neon glow of America’s underbelly. And then there’s Patricia Nell Warren’s The Front Runner, a novel that blended romance, sport, and activism in a way that still feels surprisingly modern.

But beyond the classics, there’s an entire constellation of lesser‑known writers — the ones who published a single book, or who hid behind initials, or whose work appeared in small, now‑defunct presses. These are the treasures collectors dream about: books that survived by luck, loyalty, or sheer stubbornness. Their covers often look unassuming, their blurbs vague, their print runs tiny. Yet inside, they contain worlds: coded longing, unapologetic lust, tender confessions, and the kind of storytelling that only emerges when a writer knows they’re speaking to a reader who truly understands.

That’s why rare homoerotic fiction has become so sought‑after. It’s not just nostalgia; it’s cultural archaeology. Each book is a snapshot of a moment when writing queer desire was an act of courage — or at least a calculated risk. And reading them today feels like opening a time capsule sealed with equal parts fear and exhilaration.

Your new lot of books sits right in that lineage: unusual, hard to find, and full of voices that deserve to be heard again. Whether you’re a collector, a scholar, or simply someone who appreciates stories that pushed boundaries long before it was safe to do so, these titles offer something you won’t find in contemporary MM romance or polished queer fiction. They’re raw, they’re intimate, and they carry the weight of the eras that shaped them.

And now they’re ready to be rediscovered.

  • Sant Jordi in Catalonia: A Day of Books, Roses, and Community

Sant Jordi in Catalonia: A Day of Books, Roses, and Community

Sant Jordi is one of the most beloved cultural celebrations in Catalonia, a day when the streets fill with books, roses, and the unmistakable energy of people sharing stories, traditions, and small gestures of affection.

For anyone living in or visiting the region—locals, newcomers, and especially the large international community in cities like Barcelona and Badalona—it’s a celebration that feels both deeply rooted and wonderfully open to everyone.

A Celebration of Culture and Connection

Every year on April 23rd, Catalonia transforms into a living festival of literature and love. Inspired by the legend of Saint George and the dragon, the tradition blends chivalry with creativity: roses are exchanged as symbols of affection, and books are gifted as symbols of knowledge and appreciation. The result is a unique atmosphere where couples, families, friends, and strangers all take part in the same joyful ritual.

For expats, Sant Jordi often becomes one of the most memorable days of the year. The streets are lined with bookstalls offering titles in Catalan, Spanish, and increasingly in English, reflecting the growing international community. It’s the perfect moment to discover new authors, support local bookstores, and feel part of a tradition that has been cherished for generations.

    Badalona’s Heartbeat: Francesc Layret

In Badalona, the celebration has a special charm. The city’s main commercial artery, Carrer Francesc Layret, becomes the epicenter of activity. Traffic is closed for the day, turning the entire street into a pedestrian-friendly corridor filled with book vendors, rose stands, cultural associations, and small local businesses showcasing their work.

Walking down Francesc Layret on Sant Jordi feels like stepping into a vibrant open-air festival. You’ll find:

    • Stalls from local bookstores and publishers
    • Roses in every color and style
    • Community groups and cultural associations
    • Activities for children and families
    • A lively mix of locals and visitors enjoying the day

It’s a perfect opportunity to explore the city, support local commerce, and discover hidden gems—whether that’s a new book, a handmade craft, or a conversation with someone from the neighborhood.

A Special Day for English-Language Readers

For those looking for books in English, Sant Jordi is also a great moment to browse beyond the usual shelves. Many independent sellers bring out their international selections, and online shops like bookstore.wham-vintage.com are here to make sure English-language readers have access to a curated collection all year round.

Whether you’re searching for contemporary fiction, classic literature, or niche titles, the day invites you to celebrate reading in whatever language feels like home.

    Why Sant Jordi Matters

Sant Jordi isn’t just a holiday—it’s a reminder of how culture brings people together. It’s a day when cities slow down, streets open up, and everyone shares the simple joy of giving a rose or discovering a new book. For expats, it’s a beautiful window into Catalan identity; for locals, it’s a tradition that grows richer each year.

If you’re in Badalona this April 23rd, take a stroll down Francesc Layret and let yourself be carried by the atmosphere. And if you’re looking for your next English-language read, our online bookstore is always open, ready to accompany you through this celebration of stories.

  • Welcome to Wham! Bookstore: A New Chapter Begins

Welcome to Wham! Bookstore: A New Chapter Begins

Launching a new project always feels like opening the first page of a book you’ve been waiting to read. Today, I’m excited to introduce books.wham-vintage.com, a dedicated online bookstore offering books in English and other languages — and a natural extension of the cultural world I’ve been building with Wham Music and Vintage Store.

Many of you already know me from Wham: the music shop, the vinyl crates, the vintage treasures, the conversations about bands, books and everything in between. But behind that storefront there has always been more to my story. I come from a family of booksellers, and for over 20 years I’ve worked in the world of computing, always in parallel with the publishing and cultural sectors. Books, technology and culture have shaped my life in equal measure, and this new site brings all of that together.

A New Direction: From Physical Shop to Online & Fairs

As some of you know, I’m currently in the middle of a big transition. My physical shop closes on the 28th of this month, and I’m moving fully into online sales and specialised fairs. It’s a change filled with emotion, but also with purpose. The way people discover and buy culture is evolving, and I’ve chosen to evolve with it.

Books Wham Vintage is part of that evolution: a space designed especially for students, expats and newcomers in Badalona, a community that keeps growing and that often needs access to books in English and other languages — whether for study, work, or simply the pleasure of reading in their own tongue.

A Local Plus: Personal Home Delivery in Badalona

One of the things I’m most proud to offer is a service you won’t find in big online shops:
    personal home delivery in Badalona.

If you live in the city, I will bring your books (and vinyl records, if you order from Wham) personally to your door, every day between 20:00 and 21:00 — a time that works far better than the unpredictable schedules of traditional couriers. It’s fast, comfortable, and human. A small detail that makes a big difference.

    What You’ll Find Here

    • A curated selection of books in English and other languages
    • Titles for students, language learners and international residents
    • Imports, special editions and hard-to-find books
    • A growing catalogue updated regularly
    • Blog posts with recommendations, guides, curiosities and more

Thank You for Being Part of This New Journey

Whether you’ve followed me from Wham Music and Vintage Store or you’ve just discovered this new project, thank you for being here. Books Wham Vintage is the beginning of a new chapter — one built on experience, passion and the desire to keep sharing culture in a way that feels close and personal.

I’m looking forward to everything that comes next, and I’m glad to have you along for the ride.
